Dr. Carey McCarthy is a Technical Officer at the WHO in the Health Workforce Department. In this role, Dr. McCarthy leads the WHO global agenda on the strengthening the nursing and midwifery workforces towards Universal Health Coverage. She was the primary author of the State of the World’s Nursing 2020, the WHO focal point on the State of the World’s Midwifery 2021 and led the development of the Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery 2021-2025, extended by the World Health Assembly to 2030, and the State of the World’s Nursing 2025. Prior to WHO, she was a Health Systems Scientist with the US Centers for Disease Control, the Director of Research at NCSBN, and held positions with the International Medical Corps and Doctors Without Borders/Médecins sans Frontiers. Dr. McCarthy has a bachelor’s in nursing from the University of Wisconsin, a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, and a PhD from the University of Washington.
